During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
